  Abstract
A carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with Alcian blue (AB) was prepared and successfully used for the study of the oxidative behavior of salbutamol sulphate (SBS) in PBS, pH 7.2 by cyclic voltammetric technique (CV). CV studies indicated that SBS was oxidized irreversibly at higher positive potential at bare CPE giving rise to a well defined oxidation peak at 611 mV. A secondary oxidation process was also observed at pH 9.0 and above. The modification of the CPE with AB allowed the secondary process to takes place at the neutral pH, 7.2 and also had considerable improvement of both primary and secondary peak currents as compared to the bare CPE. A linear relationship was obtained between the anodic peak current (Ipa1) and the SBS concentration in the range of 5×10-7–1.8 ×10-5 M with a correlation co-efficient of 0.997 and a detection limit of 6×10-8 M. The proposed method was successfully applied to SBS determination in commercial tablet sample.
