Abstract |

We report the optical absorption properties of a new type of gold nanoparticles (so-called nanoclusters) that exhibit strong quantum confinement effect due to their ultrasmall size (< 2 nm). The 25-gold-atom nanoclusters (1 nm diameter) capped by various thiolates (denoted as Au25(SR)18) are used as an example to illustrate their unique optical properties. Unlike their larger counterparts - plasmonic Au nanocrystals in which the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak is affected by the change in solvent, physical state (e.g. solution phase versus solid state) or capping ligands, the optical absorption spectrum of Au25(SR)18 nanoclusters instead is not affected by these factors. The distinct optical behavior of gold nanoclusters originates from the discrete electronic structure in quantum-sized nanoclusters, and is in distinct contrast with the plasmon resonance behavior of conventional gold nanoparticles (> 2 nm).
