Abstract |
|
|
The spatial organization of metallic nanostructures into defined patterns has gained tremendous interest over the last decade. The unique electrical and optical properties exhibited by assembled nanoparticles have triggered and continue to motivate the production of such assemblies in a reproducible and cost-effective way. Despite its relatively short history, self-assembly based nanofabrication is emerging as an affordable and highly efficient alternative for making a wide range of plasmonic clusters and arrays. This review focuses on the recent advances in self-assembly of noble-metal nanostructures for a variety of building blocks. Different fabrication strategies, particle assemblies and related technical and fundamental aspects are described. Particular emphasize is placed on the recurring challenges and future prospects in this rapidly growing field.
