Abstract |
|
|
This study involved the investigation of enhancement of zinc adsorption rate of bipolar chelating PS-EDTA resins and its use in a column mode. An initial factorial design of experiments showed that factors such as pH of the solution, temperature and resin dosage were important. The kinetics of adsorption of zinc was found to follow pseudo-second order reaction. Isotherm studies conducted at 10-100 initial Zn2+ concentrations provided maximum adsorption capacities of 57.8mg/g. The Freundlich isotherm model was found to describe adsorption well indicating that the contribution of amino groups towards the adsorption process was evident. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption reaction was spontaneous and exothermic in nature. Data from a column study using PS-EDTA resins followed Yan’s model and the adsorption capacity of the PS-EDTA resins was found to be less than the adsorption capacity obtained in the batch study
