Abstract |
|
|
The methodology for synthesizing structured mesoporous materials to yield large surface areas and pore volumes with uniform pore size distribution is associated with essential factors related to structuring agent, method, pH, temperature, hydrothermal treatment, separation, drying and template removal. The mesoporous materials, such as silica, carbon and metal oxides are highly ordered in two or three dimensions. Organofunctionalized solids provide pendant chains inside the pores that change the surface reactivity and allow modification of the bulk physical and chemical properties. Basic centers attached to the pendant chains can remove species from a given solution, act as a system to control drug delivery or when loaded with a specific metal, function as catalytic supports. This overview embraces the ordered mesoporous materials obtained from well-established templates that involve a class of materials science with relevant features associated with syntheses and applications, which is an importnat research field for technological advances in the near future.
