Abstract |
|
|
Nanostructured ZnO powders were prepared at room temperature by a solution process using metallic zinc powder, nitric acid, ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as source materials. XRD analysis of the obtained white powder revealed a pure wurtzite ZnO phase with no detectable hydroxide peaks. Scanning electron microscope analysis showed that the obtained powders are formed of agglomerated ZnO sheets. The substitution of sodium hydroxide with ammonia solution in the synthesis procedure resulted in nanostructured zinc hydroxides. These results suggest that both ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide play a major role in the reaction mechanism which results in the ZnO nanostructures at room temperature.
